The injections are done using a very fine needle and are therefore virtually painless (we do not need to use a numbing (anesthetic cream). Most treatments can be done within 15 minutes and the immediate redness / swelling usually settles within a further 15 minutes. Due to this, many clients have this as a ‘lunchtime treatment’ as it is so discreet.
Most clients will notice the effects within a few days, but the maximal effect of treatment is usually at around the two-week mark. Areas in the face will typically need further treatment after approximately 3-4 months.
There are usually little to no side effects, but as with any treatment there is the potential for them. The commonest are injection-site reactions, very mild bruising and some forehead heaviness (if this is the area treated). Post-treatment advice includes: staying upright for 4 hours after treatment, avoid touching the area, no exercise / sauna / steam rooms for 24 hours and no alcohol on the same day.
We do not advise any treatment if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. If you have any neuro-muscular conditions (e.g. myasthenia gravis) you cannot have treatment. Any allergies to any of the contents of the treatment injections. If you are on ‘aminoglycoside’ antibiotics (e.g. gentamicin), treatment has to be delayed.
The vast majority of dermal filler products we use contain an anesthetic to make the procedure more comfortable and we also use a numbing cream on the skin in most cases. There can be minor swelling and bruising when fillers are used, therefore it may be a little more apparent that a treatment has taken place. We use arnica cream to minimize this, and ice packs are also available.
With fillers, the effects are immediate – you will see a difference when you walk out of the treatment room. It is worth noting that lips swell more than other areas – this usually settles within 5 days after treatment. The duration of the effect of the filler depends on a number of factors. Key factors are: Amount of filler that was used and how ‘cross-linked’ it was (where it was injected) and your metabolism. We will advise you same day about the expected duration of the product used – this can vary widely from 4-18 months.
As with any injection there is a potential for infection (we take precautions to sterilize your skin) and swelling / bruising afterwards. However, this risk is minimized by the product choice and injection technique. Post-treatment advice includes: Avoid touching the area no matter the temptation to keep pressing where the filler has been injected, no exercise / sauna / steam rooms for 24 hours, ideally no smoking and very hot drinks on the day of treatment (as heat will affect the structure and distribution of the filler) and no alcohol on the same day.
We do not advise any treatment if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Also, if you have allergies to ingredients found within the Filler, we use we would need to discuss alternative Fillers or other treatments. If an infection if found, we would likely postpone treatment (e.g. a cold sore would postpone lip filler treatment until it has fully healed). Blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin, warfarin, rivaroxaban etc.) can also affect the risks of treatment, therefore this would need to be considered prior to any treatment.
